A quick format doesn’t delete your files: it merely changes the way that the operating system indexes the files on the device; this leaves all of the original data intact until some other piece of data is written to the same location. Do not use the device again, and we may be able to recover your data from a formatted hard drive, SSD, USB stick or memory card here in our lab. If however the device will mount but none of the files are accessible then you need corrupted file recovery rather than this service.
Although after performing a quick format your files remain on the device they can only stay there until new data is written to the device and overwrites the existing data. Do not reinstall an operating system to the device; do not copy files to the device; and do not store additional photographs on a formatted memory card, as each of these actions can result in the loss of potentially recoverable data. Any recovery of formatted media should be done with extreme care and as a “copy first” procedure. We do NOT perform any type of work on your original device (we create an exact duplicate of the entire drive via imaging), then we recreate the older file system based on our images of your original drive, then we will attempt to retrieve your lost files from those copied drives.

Yes, generally speaking, if it was a “quick” format. When you do a “quick” format, you only lose the index of where the files exist on the device and since no zeros are being written across the entire device, the data will remain until it is eventually over-written by other activity on the device. However, there is another type of format in modern Windows called a “full” format. A full format will write zeros across the entire drive making it very difficult or almost impossible to recover any data that may still exist.
Only a “quick” format loses access to the location of your data, not necessarily your data itself. A full format on modern Windows however will erase virtually ALL of your data. Almost any time you perform a format in Windows, on a Macintosh, or via your digital camera, you are essentially performing what amounts to a “quick” format.
Immediately stop using the item. Under no circumstances should you install a new operating system on it, nor should you transfer any files onto it, nor should you add anything new; doing any of these things will overwrite the existing data on the item. Then contact us. The sooner you cease use of the item, the greater amount of data we will likely be able to recover.

No, do not format this drive. In most cases, if you receive a “format” message, it indicates a corrupted file system (and not a blank drive) and your files are still intact. Once you format a drive, recovery may become increasingly difficult. Instead, we can rebuild the file system and recover your files.
Sometimes, but less frequently than other devices like a hard drive, USB stick etc. Since most SSDs use a function called TRIM, once the drive is formatted it is possible that all data stored on the device has also been permanently deleted.
