When you lose a partition (it shows up as ‘unallocated’, ‘RAW’ or asks for formatting), the problem is usually the lost partition map and not your data. We will rebuild the partition and recover your files from any type of hard disk (HDD), solid state drive (SSD), USB stick or memory card and do this in our offices.
When Windows or your Mac tells you that a disk needs formatting, or when you are presented with a screen telling you to ‘fix’ a disk using a partition management tool do NOT format the disk and/or do not allow the partition manager to write over the partition table. If you do either of these things you may inadvertently wipe out some of the data we want to retrieve. Do not use the built-in Windows utility called chkdsk or other tools designed to repair damage to the file system because they too will write to the disk. Please also refrain from creating, resizing or moving partitions and do not allow ANYTHING else to access/write to the disk. Simply remove power and call us. The less time the disk remains active the greater chance we have of successfully retrieving the data.
The majority of the time when a partition disappears it is because either the partition’s structure was damaged (MBR/GPT) or it was lost entirely but the data usually remains intact on the physical hard drive. These are the cases we see most often.

Restoring an unmountable partition is essentially reconstructing the directory map for your data (we never write to the original media). Firstly, we create a full forensically verified read-only copy of your entire drive. Then using this copy, we restore the partition table and determine the location of the file system which shows exactly where your partition and files are located on the hard drive. Lastly, when either the boot sector or file system is corrupted, we repair the structural elements necessary for you to access the files contained on your partition by allowing you to view them again, then we recover and return your files.

Yes, for the most part. A missing partition will nearly always mean either there is damage to your partitions’ “table” or to your “file system”, rather than loss of data. So, as long as we have a read-only image of your entire hard drive, we can rebuild your original partition layout and retrieve your files.
For the most part, no. When you receive an error saying your hard drive has become a RAW drive (or the OS is prompting you to format your hard drive), this indicates a problem with your file systems in many cases, while your data underneath is intact. Do NOT format your hard drive. We can also rebuild the partition and get back your files.
It’s probably possible. Deleted partitions leave the space unallocated, however, your data is generally still there until someone writes something else onto it. Stop using the drive now and call us asap so we can get it back for you.
No. Utilities such as chkdsk, partition repair tools etc. will write to the drive and may also overwrite the data you need to recover or possibly cause the partition to be harder to recover. Please disconnect the drive and talk to us before using it with any type of utility software.
Possibly. When a partition is formatted, initialised or has a new partition table written to it (overwriting the original), it is possible for your files to become overwritten and lost. If there is a missing partition, the best course of action would be to cease any activity on the drive and allow us to create an image of the drive first prior to attempting recovery.
