Lost photos after deleting, formatting or receiving “card error”: deleted photos are usually still present on your memory card until overwritten by new data. Every time you take a new picture, you risk overwriting the pictures you have already lost, so remove the memory card immediately. Do not continue to use your mobile phone or other device with the card in it, and don’t let it “repair” or reformat the card. The more you do this, the harder it will be for us to recover what you have lost. Once removed, leave the card alone until we tell you otherwise. This way, we will have better luck at getting as much data back as possible.
A good number of people lose their digital images even though they have not been erased. It is only the “link” to those images (that allows the computer to locate and display) which has disappeared. The process of recovering photos from memory cards is a very delicate and copy first process. We do not touch your original memory card; we make a forensic image of it, and then we scan and carve your photos and video off the copy of that image, in the correct order.

Quick format of camera. Data still existed. We made an image of the card, then carved the JPEG and Canon RAW files back out; nearly all shots were able to be recovered.
The card became corrupted when it was pulled from the device in mid-write. Once we rebuilt the file system for this memory card, we were able to recover both the video and HEIC photos that the mobile device could not access.

The questions we get asked most often about recovering lost photographs, particularly those that have been deleted from memory cards.
Yes, recovering deleted photos is one of the most common types of recoveries we perform. Deleting a photograph does not remove it from the card completely. Instead, the image remains on the card until another photograph overwrites it. Therefore, if you immediately cease to use the memory card, we should be able to successfully recover the images.
Generally, no. Cameras use a quick format method of formatting which simply deletes the directory for where the photos were located. This allows us to rebuild the directory structure of the memory card and extract the actual photos themselves, even after a format.
Yes, corrupted memory cards are quite common. These occur typically because either the card was pulled while data was still being written to it (or other similar errors) or the battery died during an ongoing shot. Regardless, we are able to repair the corrupted memory card’s file system and recover your images, even when the camera or phone can no longer read it.
Yes, we can recover images in JPEG, HEIC and virtually every type of RAW format used today by digital cameras including Canon CR2 & CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Fujifilm RAF, DNG, etc. In addition to these individual formats, we also recover the accompanying video files as part of our service.

Often, yes. Damage to a memory card may result in a loss of functionality of the card itself. However, this damage may not necessarily affect the underlying electronic components within the card. Therefore, in many cases we are able to recover photographs from damaged cards at a chip-level basis. However, we cannot say definitively what we will be able to recover from such cards without first performing a diagnostic test.
Yes, from the phone’s memory card, and we are also able, in many cases, to recover photos stored internally within smartphones, and/or from backups created prior to a problem occurring. Tell us the make and model and what happened, and we will let you know what is possible.
The cost of recovering photos from memory cards/USB sticks is £250 + VAT and from hard drives £300 + VAT (a free diagnostic will take place prior to all work taking place, and in most cases you only pay if we recover your data). If the physical damage to a memory card requires chip level repair then we would normally provide a separate higher quotation; this will be provided in writing before any repairs begin.
Most photo recovery operations are undertaken within 1 to 3 working days, although many times sooner. On average the free diagnostic is undertaken within 48 hours of receiving the item. If there is an urgent job required please notify us as soon as possible, as these can often be prioritised.
We accept items dropped into our office in Bristol Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5:30pm. Alternatively, you can send them to us by post, fully insured; memory cards generally go in a padded envelope.
